If you have a Presto pressure canners or cooker and are looking for replacement parts for missing or broken parts, this page will help you find it. Presto was founded in 1905 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It was originally called "Northwestern Steel and Iron Works" and made early canners. It changed its name in 1929 to to the "National Pressure Cooker Company". That's when it made the Old National No. 7 canner and the Old National Number 5 pressure canner cooker. Then, in 1953, it changed names again and became National Presto Industries, Inc, and today, simply Presto.

Presto Pressure Canner Replacement Parts

To find the model number of your Presto pressure canner look for:

1. a number stamped onto the side of the cooker or canner or
   a number etched into the bottom or just underneath the handle.
   or a label that will be attached to the top of the cover.
   Note: the number 409a may also be stamped on the bottom of the pot, but this is a UL certification number, not a model number

How to replace a Presto gasket:

1.  Remove the old sealing ring and the automatic air vent. You should also replace the automatic air vent every time you replace the sealing ring, or sooner if the vent plug becomes hard or inflexible.
2.  Clean the sealing ring groove and the air vent opening thoroughly..
3.  Wash the new sealing ring and automatic air vent in warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Soaking your gasket in warm water for 10 minutes before installing it can increase pliability.
4. Work the gasket into the cover a small section at a time until it is fully in place. It's ok if the gasket seems a bit big, the excess sealing ring can be worked into the cover the same way.
5. You may find that  a very light coating of cooking oil may be applied to the underside of the body lugs and sealing ring will help make the cover easier to open and close.
6. When putting the cover on the body, press one hand down on the area opposite the handle. This will help compress the sealing ring and make the cover easy to lock in place. Then, open and close the cover several times to make it operate  more freely.
7. Note that Gaskets and Sealing rings are manufactured to arrive up to 1" too large to be resilient to normal shrinkage.

How to replace the automatic air vent.

1. Turn the cover upside down and push the automatic air vent into the opening from the inside of the cover.
2. The small end of the plunger should be pointing downward as you insert the automatic air vent into the opening.
   IMPORTANT: The automatic air vent must be fully seated in the opening. The top lip of the automatic air vent should be on the top of the cover and the bottom lip should be against the underside of the cover.

The sealing ring fits around the inside rim of the cover and forms a pressure-tight seal between the cover and the body of the pressure canner during canning and cooking. When installing a sealing ring, work it into the cover in four small sections, for example, top, bottom , left and right.

Work it into the groove a small section at a time until it is fully in place.

Place the cover on the cooker body.

Put one hand on the top center of the cover and push down firmly.

Open and close the cover several times.
