If you are interested in growing your own fruit or vegetables, one of the basic starting points is understanding what plant zone, or plant hardiness zone, you are in. These zones tell you the normal range of maximum cold in the winter. Before you buy any perennials (plants that are intended to live from year to year), you need to know what zone you are in and make sure the plant is suitable for that zone. For example, you can't grow Oranges in Minnesota! They won't survive the winter cold. But it can work the opposite way, also. Some plants cannot handle too much heat. For example rhubarb does not grow well in the Deep South, and apples will not produce fruit in Florida or southern Texas. They actually need the cold in the winter!
