Notes for November 2024: Crop growth is slowing down, except for Christmas tree farms and if you live in southern California, southern Texas, Florida or along the Gulf coast where citrus are starting, and believe it or not, the blueberry and strawberry season in those areas is about to begin. See your state harvest calendar . This year, much of the country is still seeing mild weather, so lettuce, peas, broccoli, cabbage  and other greens are thriving.  And this is a good time to get a canner and  learn how to preserve foods for the winter, like canning some applesauce, apple butter or jam, which make great gifts. As do your own homemade specialty liqueurs! How about homemade cranberry sauce or a pumpkin pie made from a real pumpkin for the holidays? They have a hayride, a shop, a bakery, a concessions stand, a snack shack overlooking a pond, a flower field to pick your own flowers (I was told this was new this year), a few lawn games like darts, tetherball, and rubber duck racing, and sweet potato launching. I was surprised at how big the farm was, and ended up spending all afternoon there. They also have a wedding location by the pond, and lots of farm animals, though they discourage you from petting or feeding them. And while their summer fest is over, they prep the corn field to make a cornmaze for their Fall on the Farm event.
  Pumpkins and corn maze: Every Saturday and Sunday September 24th through November 6th. We will be open for corn maze, pumpkin patch, hayride, animal viewing & more!.

Another heritage variety in our orchard is Roxbury Russet which originated with the Pilgrims in Massachusetts. Other heritage varieties include Grimes Golden, which is associated with Johnny Appleseed, and Albemarle Pippins. Pippins were grown by President Thomas Jefferson and President George Washington and are regarded as one the best apples in the world after they ripen in storage for several months.   Peaches: They grow seven varieties of peaches that ripen over a long period of time. As a general rule, the early peaches are Clingstone. The Freestone peaches start with Redhaven, followed by Fireprince , Winblow, Contender and Flameprince. The early peaches like Rich May ripen at the start of the Pick Your Own Blackberry & Blueberry season, while variety like Winblo and Contender ripen later in the Blackberry & Blueberry season. We are located on the east side of 220 at the corner of Tucker Rd and 220. Payment: Cash, only. Strawberries are available through the month of May. Our strawberries are picked fresh every day. Stop by and get a fresh picked basket or pick your own! Our strawberries are grown on raised beds covered with black plastic. We offer pre-picked or pick-your-own strawberries.
